Abstract
This study examined the relations between depression of fathers and interactions characteristics of young children. Subjects were six- to eight-month-old infants of the mothers, who consented to participate in a cohort study to identify causes of atopy and asthma, and their fathers. Eleven pairs of children and their fathers with a high degree of depression and twenty pairs of children and their father with a low degree of depression were selected. Data were analyzed by SPSS and the findings are as follows: First, in terms of father-child interactions between the two groups of fathers depending on the degree of depression, a higher degree of the fathers¡¯ depression led to a lower degree of the children¡¯s interactions. Second, in terms of atypical behavioral characteristics of fathers, fathers with a higher degree of depression showed a higher level of atypical behaviors. Third, in terms of the relations between fathers¡¯ depression and children¡¯s development, children of fathers with a higher degree of depression showed a lower degree of development in the global muscle. Fourth, a higher level of stress in daily life led to a higher degree of depression among fathers based on the regression analysis of the effect of daily life stress on depression.
